An e-commerce Revolution: What's New in Magento 2.3

Which version of Magento 2 are you currently working with?

At the Luxinten office we have made an extensive study of the revolutionary Magento 2.3. From its speed (after our optimisations =) ) and responsiveness alone, we are truly delighted with everything we've seen.

Features of Magento 2.3:

PWA

It's been predicted that by the end of this year, 90% of smartphones will be used to make shopping purchases. Progressive Web Apps keep mobile in mind and make it faster for consumers and cheaper for clients to sell online. Magento 2.3 doubles page performance, so shoppers won't get frustrated with slow loading times and leave your online store without making a purchase.

Other features of Magento 2.3’s PWA Studio include the tools to localise and personalise content and manage channels collectively in one code base. There are also updated development tools for fixes, debugging and fast prototyping.

DB Schema

This update to Magento also adds a declarative database schema. The DB Schema defines database structures and changes in XML files, instead of defining them with install scripts. By converting XML schema files into SQL statements, Magento 2.3 simplifies the upgrade process and also lets you roll back database changes to a previous version.

Asynchronous and Bulk Web API

Asynchronous API in Magento 2.3 enables users to process a large number of API requests asynchronously, without waiting for a server response. This fixes slow performance issues in Magento, as the API works over the message queue and permits easier batch processing. Previously reserved for Magento Commerce alone, this feature is now part of the Magento 2.3 update.

Elasticsearch Updates

Elasticsearch was previously reserved for Magento Commerce alone but the latest version (v5) is now open source and part of the Magento 2.3 update! A multitenant-capable full-text search engine with a HTTP web interface and schema-free JSON documents, java-based Elasticsearch could well be the default search engine of the future.

If you run a large store with many items of stock, this robust tool will allow you to implement powerful search capabilities and filtering. With Elasticsearch, you are secure in the knowledge that customers aren't missing or overlooking your products.

GraphQL

As developers, we are always very excited about powerful technical features like GraphQL. A data query language originally developed by Facebook, GraphQL makes it far easier for developers to retrieve data. By getting less data and making fewer API requests, a GraphQL query differs from a SOAP/REST request that uses at least one request per resource. Because all the data it returns matches with an endpoint, GraphQL allows developers to retrieve information even when battling slow bandwidth and Internet connection issues.

WYSIWYG Upgrade

In Magento 2.3, the WYSIWYG editor (or TinyMCE) has been upgraded to version 4. This brings many useful new widgets and an extensive media gallery implemented as plugins. This is really an interim update, as TinyMCE is already preparing for version 5.

Also added is a granular cache management ACL. This allows developers to control which user roles can view and delete the Magento caches. It's a useful tool for training new staff, as you can specifically regulate the cache management authority of each team member.
